Frequently Asked Questions

Traverse City Doula & Birth Support FAQs

What is a birth doula, and how do you support my care team?

A birth doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and educational support throughout pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum transition. While I do not provide medical care, my job is to help you feel informed, prepared, and confident every step of the way. I work alongside your doctors, nurses, or midwives to support your choices.

What does a Traverse City birth doula do during labor?

During labor, I am continuously by your side offering:

  • Hands-on comfort measures like massage, counterpressure, and hip squeezes

  • Positioning guidance to encourage labor progress and comfort

  • Unwavering emotional support and breathing techniques

  • Information and guidance so you feel empowered making decisions

  • Partner support to help your support person feel calm and connected

  • Advocacy support to ensure your birth preferences are heard and respected

What other benefits come with hiring a birth doula?

Doula care extends far beyond the delivery room. Your birth package includes:

  • Personalized prenatal check-ins and childbirth prep

  • Customized birth preference planning

  • Feeding, pumping, and lactation guidance

  • Comfort tools, exercises, and herbal labor prep

  • Trusted local referrals to Northern Michigan providers

  • Guidance for preparing siblings and navigating hospital scenarios

  • In-home postpartum check-ins to ease your transition

Do you replace my birth partner?

Not at all. I support both of you as a team. I help partners feel confident by demonstrating comfort techniques like massage, counterpressure, and labor positioning. Labor can feel intense when watching someone you love in discomfort. I help your partner stay steady, refreshed, and actively involved in the way that feels best for your relationship.

What is the difference between a birth doula and a midwife?

A midwife is a medical provider responsible for clinical care, clinical monitoring, and delivery. As a doula, I offer continuous non-medical physical, emotional, and educational support. Midwives and doulas regularly work side by side to support your entire birth journey.

Can you support my birth if I choose an epidural, VBAC, or planned C-section?

Yes, absolutely. I support all choices and birth paths, including unmedicated labor, epidural births, scheduled or unexpected C-sections, and VBACs (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean). I provide evidence-based information, physical comfort, and steady encouragement regardless of your care plan.

Do you attend both home births and hospital births in Northern Michigan?

Yes! I support home births alongside midwives, birth center births, and hospital deliveries across Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Benzie, Antrim, and Wexford counties.

Do you support births at Munson Medical Center?

Yes. I regularly support clients delivering in the maternity unit at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. I work collaboratively with the hospital's medical team to help you feel calm, respected, and empowered.

When should I hire a birth doula?

Many clients book during their second trimester, but you are welcome to reach out at any stage of pregnancy. I limit my availability to 3 to 4 births per month to ensure dedicated care. Booking early reserves your spot and gives us more time to build a strong connection.

How do I pay for doula care, and do you accept Michigan Medicaid?

Yes! I am an approved Traverse City Medicaid doula. I accept straight Michigan Medicaid as well as regional health plans including Priority Health, Molina Healthcare, McLaren, and Blue Cross Complete. I also accept HSA/FSA funds, private pay, cash, check, Venmo, PayPal, and flexible payment plans to make care accessible for every family.

Do you offer postpartum support and herbal care?

Yes. Postpartum support includes newborn care, feeding guidance, light household assistance, and emotional check-ins. I also offer custom herbal support (such as third-trimester teas, healing sitz baths, and recovery compresses) crafted safely and mindfully for your body's healing.

What if I live outside Traverse City or Northern Michigan?

I offer virtual doula support! If we cannot work together in person, I can provide prenatal guidance, birth prep, and emotional support remotely from afar.

Traverse City Birth & Newborn Photography FAQs

Do you offer birth photography alongside doula care?

Yes! As a dual birth doula and photographer, I seamlessly combine labor support with quiet, documentary-style birth photography. I capture the raw beauty of your birth story (from active labor to first skin-to-skin moments) without intruding on your sacred space.

How do you keep birth photography comfortable and empowering?

I bring a calm, unobtrusive presence to every delivery. Having navigated birth as both a parent and a doula, I protect your privacy and dignity while capturing real, emotional moments so you feel safe, seen, and celebrated.

What is your style for Fresh 48, newborn, and family sessions?

Natural, relaxed, and unposed. Whether in your home or at Munson Medical Center for a Fresh 48 session, I focus on authentic connection like sweet glances, tiny details, and family snuggles with gentle prompts rather than stiff posing.

How do you edit your photos?

My editing style is rich, authentic, and timeless with a subtle vintage film feel. I do not heavily alter your appearance; your gallery will celebrate your raw, beautiful self just as you are.

When should I book photography, and how far do you travel?

For births, reach out early in pregnancy since I take a limited number of clients per month. For Fresh 48 and family sessions, feel free to inquire at any time. If I have space in my schedule, I will gladly make it work! I primarily serve Traverse City and drive 1 to 2 hours for birth coverage across Northern Michigan.
